Coopers Rock State Forest is located in Preston and Monongalia County West Virginia on 12,713 acres divided by Interstate 68 about 13 miles east of Morgantown. The park gets its name from a man who was a cooper (barrel maker) and hid from the law near the overlook for many years. The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) built many of the structures still in use.
The park is covered with native hardwoods and Hemlock creating a nice shaded area for family picnics and exploring the forest. The altitude creates a naturally cooler climate during summer months, so packing along a sweater is advisable. The trails around the overlook area are rough and uneven with many roots and rocks exposed.
Most people use the park for picnicking. The main picnic area is located near the overlook. They include a grill and trash can. There is also a bathroom near the picnic area. The Park does not have much of a children's play ground. There is also a concession stand opened during the summer months.
There is a campground for travel trailers and tenting available. There is also cabins available for rent. There is no restaurant, but you can purchase snacks and souvenirs form the gift shop during summer.
The Park also offers rustic picnic shelters which hold about 60 - 100 people and cost between $70 - $100 to rent on the weekends.
The overlook at Coopers Rocks provides a great view of The Cheat River canyon.
Coopers Rock provides plenty of outdoor activity with rock climbing, hiking, cross country skiing, cycling and mountain biking. The park has over 50 miles of marked trails.
